Home Safety Checklist for Seniors
A room-by-room guide to reducing fall risk and helping seniors stay safe and independent at home. Built from what a Registered Occupational Therapist looks for during an in-home assessment across Coquitlam and the Fraser Valley.
Entryway & Hallways
- Remove loose rugs or secure them with non-slip backing
- Ensure walkways are clear of cords, shoes, and clutter
- Install bright lighting near doorways and along hallways
- Add a sturdy bench near the entry for putting on shoes
Living Room
- Arrange furniture to allow clear, wide walking paths
- Choose chairs with armrests and a firm, higher seat
- Keep frequently used items within easy reach
- Avoid low coffee tables that create tripping hazards
Kitchen
- Store daily-use dishes and food between waist and shoulder height
- Use a stable step stool with a handle — never a chair
- Wipe up spills immediately to prevent slips
- Consider a lever-handle faucet for easier use
Bathroom
- Install grab bars beside the toilet and inside the shower/tub
- Add a non-slip mat in the tub and on the bathroom floor
- Use a raised toilet seat or shower chair if needed
- Set the water heater to 120°F (49°C) to prevent scalds
Bedroom
- Keep a lamp, phone, and flashlight within reach of the bed
- Install a nightlight between the bed and bathroom
- Use a bed at a height that allows feet to rest flat on the floor
- Clear the floor around the bed of rugs and clutter
Stairs
- Install sturdy handrails on both sides of stairways
- Ensure steps are well-lit at the top and bottom
- Mark step edges with high-contrast, non-slip tape
- Repair loose or worn stair treads promptly
